James van Valkenburg was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, James showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. James received his formal music education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of some of the most renowned pianists of the time. He graduated with honors in 2007 and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. James made his debut performance at Carnegie Hall in 2008, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2, also known as the "Moonlight Sonata." This performance marked the beginning of James's rise to fame as a classical pianist. Over the years, James has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Sydney Opera House. He has collaborated with some of the most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of James's most memorable performances was his rendition of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, with the New York Philharmonic in 2012. The performance received a standing ovation and was hailed as one of the best performances of the year. James has also won numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. He was also a recipient of the Gilmore Artist Award in 2014, which is awarded to pianists who demonstrate exceptional musicianship and creativity. In addition to his performances, James is also a dedicated music educator. He has taught masterclasses at some of the most renowned music schools around the world, including the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Conservatoire de Paris. James's dedication to music and his exceptional talent have made him one of the most sought-after classical pianists of his generation.
