David J. Evans was a British classical music composer who was born on May 12, 1936, in London, England. He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Evans was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Evans attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition under the tutelage of Sir Lennox Berkeley. He also studied piano and conducting, and after graduating, he worked as a freelance pianist and conductor for several years. In 1962, Evans was appointed as the director of music at St. George's School in Windsor, where he remained for 14 years. During his time at St. George's, Evans composed several works for the school's choir and orchestra, including his first major work, the St. George's Service, which was premiered in 1964. In 1976, Evans left St. George's to become the director of music at St. Paul's School in London. He remained in this position until his retirement in 1996. During his tenure at St. Paul's, Evans continued to compose, and his works were performed by the school's choir and orchestra, as well as by other ensembles throughout the UK. Evans' music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and use of traditional forms and structures. He was influenced by the music of composers such as Vaughan Williams, Elgar, and Britten, as well as by the English choral tradition. One of Evans' most well-known works is his Requiem, which was composed in 1980. The piece is scored for choir, soloists, and orchestra, and is notable for its use of traditional Latin texts as well as English poetry. The Requiem has been performed by numerous choirs and orchestras throughout the UK and has been recorded several times. Another notable work by Evans is his Symphony No. 1, which was composed in 1986. The piece is scored for a large orchestra and is notable for its use of traditional forms and structures, as well as its lush harmonies and sweeping melodies. The Symphony has been performed by several orchestras throughout the UK and has been recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his choral and orchestral works, Evans also composed several works for solo instruments, including his Sonata for Violin and Piano, which was composed in 1972. The piece is notable for its virtuosic violin writing and its use of traditional forms and structures. Evans' music has been praised for its beauty, craftsmanship, and emotional depth. His works have been performed by some of the UK's leading ensembles and have been recorded by several major record labels. David J. Evans passed away on January 1, 2008, at the age of 71. He is remembered as one of the UK's leading composers of choral and orchestral music, and his works continue to be performed and recorded to this day.
