From a young age, he showed a keen interest in music and began his musical training at the age of six. He started playing the piano and later learned to play the trumpet. He studied at the National School of Art in Havana, where he received a degree in trumpet performance. He then went on to study conducting at the Higher Institute of Art in Havana, where he received a degree in orchestral conducting. In 1986, Pérez Mesa began his professional career as a conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was appointed as the principal conductor of the orchestra in 1990. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances, both in Cuba and abroad. In 1995, Pérez Mesa was appointed as the principal conductor of the Matanzas Symphony Orchestra, where he continued to showcase his talent and passion for music. He also served as the principal conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica from 2003 to 2005. Pérez Mesa's talent and dedication to music have earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1997, he was awarded the National Culture Distinction, the highest honor given to artists in Cuba. He has also been awarded the Alejo Carpentier Medal, the Order of Cultural Merit, and the Order of José Martí. Pérez Mesa has conducted numerous orchestras around the world, including the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico. One of Pérez Mesa's most notable performances was his conducting of the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba in a concert at the Vatican in 1998. The concert was attended by Pope John Paul II and was broadcast live to millions of viewers around the world. In addition to his work as a conductor, Pérez Mesa is also a composer and arranger.
