The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that has been an integral part of the National Ballet of Canada since its founding in 1951. The orchestra has played a vital role in the success of the National Ballet of Canada, providing live music for all of the company's performances. The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra was founded by Celia Franca, the founder and first artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada. Franca recognized the importance of live music in dance performances and made it a priority to have a full orchestra for the company's productions. The orchestra's first performance was in 1951, accompanying the National Ballet of Canada's production of "The Nutcracker." Over the years, the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra has had many talented musicians as members. Some of the orchestra's most notable members include concertmaster Aaron Schwebel, principal cellist David Hetherington, and principal bassist Tim Dawson. The orchestra has also had many guest conductors, including Sir Andrew Davis, Charles Dutoit, and Keri-Lynn Wilson. The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra has performed at many prestigious venues, including the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Royal Opera House in London. The orchestra has also toured extensively, performing in cities across Canada and around the world. One of the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra's most notable performances was in 1983, when the orchestra accompanied the National Ballet of Canada's production of "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. The performance was a huge success and received rave reviews from critics. In addition to its performances with the National Ballet of Canada, the orchestra has also collaborated with other dance companies and musicians. The orchestra has worked with the Canadian Opera Company, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, among others. In 2011, the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra was awarded the Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble or Soloist(s) with Large Ensemble Accompaniment for its recording of "Cinderella." The album was recorded live during the National Ballet of Canada's production of "Cinderella" and featured music by Sergei Prokofiev.
