Alexander Raskatov is a contemporary classical music composer who was born on September 1, 1953, in Moscow, Russia. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. Raskatov started playing the piano at a young age and later studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory under the tutelage of Albert Leman. Raskatov's early works were influenced by the avant-garde music of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly the works of György Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki. His music is characterized by its intense emotional expression, use of unconventional techniques, and incorporation of elements from Russian Orthodox liturgical music. One of Raskatov's most notable works is his opera "A Dog's Heart," which premiered in Amsterdam in 2010. The opera is based on the novella of the same name by Mikhail Bulgakov and tells the story of a stray dog that is transformed into a human by a mad scientist. The opera features a libretto by Cesare Mazzonis and has been praised for its inventive use of sound and its exploration of themes such as identity and power. Another significant work by Raskatov is his "Nunc dimittis" for choir and cello, which was commissioned by the Hilliard Ensemble and premiered in 1997. The piece is a setting of the text from the Gospel of Luke, which describes the moment when the elderly Simeon sees the infant Jesus in the temple and declares that he can now die in peace. The work is notable for its hauntingly beautiful melodies and its use of extended vocal techniques. Raskatov has also composed several works for solo instruments, including his "Five Minutes from the Life of W.A.M." for solo violin, which was written in memory of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The piece is a virtuosic tour de force that showcases the violin's range and capabilities. In addition to his work as a composer, Raskatov has also been active as a teacher and mentor. He has taught composition at the Moscow Conservatory and the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and has mentored several young composers who have gone on to achieve international recognition. Overall, Alexander Raskatov is a composer whose work is characterized by its emotional intensity, inventive use of sound, and incorporation of elements from Russian Orthodox liturgical music. His music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, and he is widely regarded as one of the most important composers of his generation.
