Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he was born in Fife, Scotland, and was likely educated at the University of St. Andrews. Carver is best known for his choral music, which was highly regarded during his lifetime and continues to be performed and studied today. His most famous work is the "Magnificat" cycle, a series of nine settings of the Magnificat text, which was likely composed for the Chapel Royal in Stirling Castle. Carver's music is characterized by its complex polyphony and use of imitation, as well as its use of plainchant and other traditional elements of liturgical music. His works are often compared to those of his English contemporaries, such as Thomas Tallis and William Byrd. Carver's career as a composer is somewhat mysterious, as few records of his life and work have survived. It is known that he held several positions as a musician and composer, including serving as a singer and composer for the Chapel Royal in Stirling Castle, and later as the master of the music at Scone Abbey. In addition to his choral music, Carver also composed instrumental music, including a set of "In Nomine" settings for viols, which were likely intended for use in private chambers rather than in a liturgical setting. Despite his relative obscurity today, Carver was highly regarded during his lifetime, and his music was widely performed and admired. His "Magnificat" cycle in particular was considered a masterpiece of Renaissance choral music, and was likely performed at important state occasions and religious ceremonies. Carver's legacy as a composer has been somewhat overshadowed by his English contemporaries, but his music continues to be studied and performed today. His use of complex polyphony and traditional liturgical elements has influenced generations of composers, and his "Magnificat" cycle remains a beloved and important work in the choral repertoire.More....
