Intersax is a classical music ensemble that specializes in saxophone quartet performances. The group was founded in 1997 by four saxophonists who shared a passion for classical music and a desire to explore the unique sound and versatility of the saxophone. Since its inception, Intersax has become one of the most respected and sought-after saxophone quartets in the world, known for its virtuosic performances and innovative programming. The founding members of Intersax were Jérôme Laran, Jean-Denis Michat, Arno Bornkamp, and Lars Mlekusch. All four musicians were accomplished saxophonists with extensive experience performing in classical music ensembles. They came together with the goal of creating a new kind of chamber music ensemble that would showcase the saxophone's potential as a classical music instrument. From the beginning, Intersax was committed to pushing the boundaries of what was possible with the saxophone quartet. The group's repertoire includes a wide range of classical music styles, from Baroque and Classical to Romantic and Contemporary. They have also commissioned numerous new works for saxophone quartet from some of the world's leading composers. One of Intersax's most notable performances was at the World Saxophone Congress in Valencia, Spain in 2000. The group's performance was widely praised for its technical precision and musicality, and it helped to establish Intersax as a major force in the world of classical saxophone music. Over the years, Intersax has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals. They have also collaborated with a wide range of other musicians and ensembles, including orchestras, choirs, and jazz musicians. In addition to their performances, Intersax has also received numerous awards and accolades for their contributions to classical music. In 2003, the group was awarded the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who are making a significant impact in the world of classical music. They have also been awarded the Dutch Music Prize, the highest honor for classical musicians in the Netherlands. Despite their many accomplishments, Intersax remains committed to exploring new possibilities for the saxophone quartet and pushing the boundaries of classical music. They continue to perform and record new works, and they are widely regarded as one of the most innovative and exciting classical music ensembles of our time.
