Malcolm J. Merriweather is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a conductor, singer, and educator. Born in 1980 in New York City, Merriweather grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. His mother was a music teacher, and his father was a jazz musician, so it was only natural that Merriweather would develop a love for music at a young age. Merriweather began his musical training as a singer, studying at the Harlem School of the Arts and the Juilliard School. He later went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music degree from Westminster Choir College. During his time at Westminster, Merriweather was a member of the Westminster Choir, which is known for its performances with major orchestras and conductors around the world. After completing his studies, Merriweather began his career as a conductor, working with a number of prestigious ensembles and orchestras. He served as the assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and he was also the associate conductor of the New York City-based Dessoff Choirs. In addition, Merriweather has conducted the National Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra, among others. Merriweather is also an accomplished singer, having performed as a soloist with a number of orchestras and ensembles. He has sung with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others. In addition, Merriweather has performed in a number of operas, including Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and Verdi's "La Traviata." One of the highlights of Merriweather's career was his performance at the 2013 Presidential Inauguration, where he conducted the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. The choir's performance was widely praised, and Merriweather was lauded for his skill as a conductor. In addition to his work as a conductor and singer, Merriweather is also an educator. He has taught at a number of institutions, including the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. Merriweather is currently the director of choirs and an assistant professor of music at Brooklyn College. Merriweather has received a number of awards and honors throughout his career. In 2013, he was named one of Musical America's "Top 30 Professionals of the Year," and in 2014, he was awarded the Sphinx Medal of Excellence. The Sphinx Organization is a non-profit organization that works to promote diversity in classical music, and the Medal of Excellence is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to this cause. Merriweather is also a strong advocate for social justice and equality in the arts. He has spoken out about the need for greater diversity in classical music, and he has worked to create opportunities for underrepresented groups in the field. In 2018, he founded the Voices of Haiti, a choir made up of children from Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
