He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a violinist. From a young age, LeVines was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of four. LeVines grew up in a musical household and was encouraged to pursue music as a career. He attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition under the guidance of renowned composers such as Milton Babbitt and Elliott Carter. During his time at Juilliard, LeVines developed a unique style of composition that blended traditional classical music with modern techniques. After graduating from Juilliard, LeVines began his career as a composer, and his works were quickly recognized for their innovative style and technical complexity. His early works, such as his Piano Sonata No. 1 and String Quartet No. 1, were well-received by critics and audiences alike. In 1978, LeVines was awarded the prestigious Rome Prize, which allowed him to spend two years studying and composing in Rome, Italy. During his time in Rome, LeVines was exposed to the works of Italian composers such as Claudio Monteverdi and Giuseppe Verdi, which had a significant influence on his later works. LeVines' most famous work is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1982 by the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Zubin Mehta. The symphony is a complex and challenging work that showcases LeVines' unique style of composition.
