In 1938, when Naomi was 15 years old, her family fled Austria to escape the Nazi regime. They settled in Palestine, where Naomi continued her musical studies at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. She studied composition with Paul Ben-Haim and piano with Mindru Katz. In 1950, she married the composer and conductor Noam Sheriff, and they had two children together. Naomi's music was influenced by her Jewish heritage and the folk music of the Middle East. She often incorporated traditional Jewish melodies and rhythms into her compositions. Her music was also influenced by the modernist movement in music, and she experimented with atonal and serial techniques. One of Naomi's most famous works is her oratorio "The Song of Songs," which she composed in 1962. The piece is based on the biblical book of the same name and features a solo soprano, choir, and orchestra. She was also a respected teacher and mentor to many young composers. Naomi Schemer-Sapir passed away on June 26, 2004, at the age of 81.
