Els Biesemans is a Belgian classical pianist and chamber musician who has gained international recognition for her virtuosic performances and insightful interpretations of a wide range of repertoire. Born in Ghent, Belgium in 1978, Biesemans began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent with Claude Coppens and later at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln with Pavel Gililov, where she earned her Master's degree with distinction. Biesemans has won numerous awards and prizes throughout her career, including first prize at the International Piano Competition of San Bartolomeo al Mare in Italy, the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship, and the Rotary Club Ghent Scholarship. She has also been a finalist in several other prestigious competitions, such as the International Piano Competition of Porto and the International Piano Competition of Orleans. Biesemans has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. She has appeared at major venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Salle Cortot in Paris, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She has also been a guest artist at numerous festivals, including the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier, the Festival de Musique de Menton, and the Festival de Wallonie. One of the highlights of Biesemans' career was her performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Brussels Philharmonic under the baton of Michel Tabachnik. The concert was broadcast live on Belgian national television and received critical acclaim for Biesemans' sensitive and nuanced interpretation of the concerto. She has also collaborated with many other orchestras, including the Orchestre National de Lille, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. As a chamber musician, Biesemans has worked with some of the most renowned musicians of our time, such as violinist Augustin Dumay, cellist Gary Hoffman, and clarinetist Sabine Meyer. She is a founding member of the Trio Portici, which has been praised for its "perfect balance, impeccable ensemble playing, and refined musicality." The trio has performed at major venues and festivals throughout Europe and has recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven's complete piano trios. Biesemans is also a dedicated teacher and has given masterclasses at institutions such as the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. She is currently a professor of piano at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. In addition to her performing and teaching activities, Biesemans is also a passionate advocate for contemporary music. She has premiered works by composers such as Wim Henderickx, Annelies Van Parys, and Daan Janssens and has collaborated with the renowned contemporary music ensemble Ictus. She is also a member of the Belgian contemporary music ensemble Champ d'Action. Biesemans' playing has been praised for its "clarity, precision, and emotional depth" and for her ability to "bring out the essence of the music."
