Sydney Chamber Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Sydney, Australia. The choir was founded in 1975 by Nicholas Routley, a prominent Australian composer and conductor. Since its inception, the choir has established itself as one of the leading choral groups in Australia, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The early years of the Sydney Chamber Choir were marked by a strong commitment to contemporary music, with the choir regularly commissioning and performing works by Australian composers. This focus on new music helped to establish the choir as a leading voice in the Australian classical music scene, and it quickly gained a reputation for its adventurous programming and high-quality performances. Over the years, the Sydney Chamber Choir has performed a wide range of repertoire, from early music to contemporary works. The choir has collaborated with many of Australia's leading orchestras and soloists, and has also toured extensively both nationally and internationally. One of the highlights of the Sydney Chamber Choir's early years was its performance of the Australian premiere of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem in 1978. This monumental work, which was written to commemorate the dead of both World Wars, is widely regarded as one of the greatest choral works of the 20th century. The Sydney Chamber Choir's performance of the War Requiem was a major milestone in the choir's history, and helped to establish its reputation as a leading interpreter of contemporary choral music. In the years that followed, the Sydney Chamber Choir continued to build on its reputation for innovative programming and high-quality performances. The choir's repertoire expanded to include works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as more contemporary works by composers such as Arvo Pärt, John Tavener, and Eric Whitacre. One of the most significant moments in the Sydney Chamber Choir's history came in 2003, when it appointed Paul Stanhope as its new artistic director. Stanhope, who is also a composer, brought a fresh perspective to the choir's programming and helped to further establish its reputation as one of Australia's leading choral ensembles. Under Stanhope's leadership, the Sydney Chamber Choir has continued to push the boundaries of choral music, commissioning and performing new works by Australian and international composers. The choir has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. In recent years, the Sydney Chamber Choir has continued to go from strength to strength, with a string of critically acclaimed performances and recordings. In 2018, the choir released its first album under Paul Stanhope's direction, titled Paul Stanhope: Lux Aeterna. The album, which features works by Stanhope and other contemporary composers, was praised for its "exquisite singing" and "impeccable musicianship" by critics. The Sydney Chamber Choir has also been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2010, the choir was awarded the prestigious APRA/AMCOS Art Music Award for Excellence in Choral Music, in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the Australian classical music scene. The choir has also been a regular finalist in the Australian Music Centre's Classical Music Awards, and has won numerous awards at the Sydney Eisteddfod.
