Ronald N. Miller, also known as Orlando Murden, was an American songwriter and composer who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on May 8, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, Miller grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. Miller's parents encouraged him to pursue music, and he began playing the piano at a young age. Miller's musical talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a skilled pianist. He attended the Chicago Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition and music theory. After completing his studies, Miller began working as a songwriter and composer. Miller's early works were primarily in the pop and R&B genres. He wrote songs for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and Michael Jackson. However, Miller's true passion was classical music, and he began to focus more on composing in this genre. One of Miller's most significant works was his opera, "The Dream Keeper." The opera, which premiered in 1981, was based on the poetry of Langston Hughes. The work was well-received by critics and audiences alike, and it helped establish Miller as a prominent composer in the classical music world. In addition to his opera, Miller composed numerous other works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His music was known for its lush harmonies, intricate rhythms, and emotional depth. Miller's compositions often explored themes of love, loss, and the human experience. Miller's music was performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also received numerous awards and honors for his work, including a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s) for his arrangement of Michael Jackson's "Thriller." Despite his success as a composer, Miller remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to compose and teach music until his death on July 23, 2007, at the age of 74. Miller's legacy as a composer and musician continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world. His music remains a testament to his talent, passion, and dedication to the art of classical music.
