Elisa Citterio is a renowned Italian violinist and conductor who has made a significant impact on the classical music scene. Born in Brescia, Italy, in 1971, Citterio began playing the violin at the age of six. She showed exceptional talent and was soon accepted into the prestigious Conservatorio di Musica "Luca Marenzio" in Brescia, where she studied under the guidance of renowned violinist Luigi Ferro. Citterio's talent continued to flourish, and she went on to study at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, where she was mentored by Salvatore Accardo. She also studied with Franco Gulli at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole and with Thomas Brandis at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. In 1999, Citterio joined the Accademia Bizantina, a renowned Italian baroque orchestra, as its concertmaster. She quickly established herself as a leading figure in the early music world, and her performances with the orchestra were widely acclaimed. In 2004, she was appointed as the orchestra's artistic director, a position she held until 2016. During her tenure as the artistic director of the Accademia Bizantina, Citterio led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." She also collaborated with other leading musicians and ensembles, including Jordi Savall, Philippe Jaroussky, and the Venice Baroque Orchestra. In 2017, Citterio was appointed as the music director of the Toronto-based Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir, one of North America's leading period ensembles. Her appointment was met with great excitement, and she quickly established herself as a dynamic and innovative leader. Under Citterio's direction, Tafelmusik has continued to push the boundaries of early music performance, exploring new repertoire and collaborating with artists from a range of musical traditions. Her performances with the orchestra have been widely praised for their energy, precision, and emotional depth. Citterio has also continued to perform as a soloist and chamber musician, appearing at major festivals and concert halls around the world. She has recorded extensively, with a repertoire that ranges from baroque masterpieces to contemporary works. Throughout her career, Citterio has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2002, she was awarded the prestigious Premio Abbiati, Italy's highest honor for classical music. She has also been awarded the Prix Opus in Quebec and the Echo Klassik Award in Germany. Citterio's contributions to the world of classical music have been significant, and her passion for early music has inspired countless musicians and audiences around the world.
