He was born on November 15, 1939, in Innsbruck, Austria. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. Franz showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He received his first piano lessons from his mother and later studied with the renowned pianist and composer, Carl Orff. Hummel's musical education continued at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he studied composition with Cesar Bresgen and conducting with Herbert von Karajan. He also studied piano with Bruno Seidlhofer and chamber music with Sandor Vegh. After completing his studies, Hummel began his career as a pianist and conductor, performing in concerts throughout Europe and the United States. Hummel's compositions are characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and intricate rhythms. He wrote in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and operas. His music is often inspired by literature, art, and nature. One of Hummel's most famous works is his opera, "The Love for Three Oranges," which is based on a play by Carlo Gozzi. The opera premiered in 1981 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and has since been performed in opera houses around the world. The opera is known for its colorful orchestration, witty libretto, and lively characters. Hummel's other notable works include his Piano Concerto No. 2, which was premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1973, and his Symphony No. 2, which was commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985. He also wrote several chamber music works, including his String Quartet No. 2, which was premiered by the Amadeus Quartet in 1976. In addition to his work as a composer, Hummel was also a respected conductor. He served as the principal conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra from 1975 to 1986 and the principal guest conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra from 1986 to 1991. He also conducted many other orchestras around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Hummel was the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1989, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, and in 1994, he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit. He was also a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Hummel continued to compose and perform music until his death on December 1, 2007, in Stuttgart, Germany.
