The orchestra's founding conductor was Mario Rossi, who led the ensemble until 1946. Under Rossi's leadership, the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. In 1935, the orchestra performed the world premiere of Respighi's "Concerto Gregoriano" with the composer as soloist. After Rossi's departure, the orchestra was led by a series of distinguished conductors, including Franco Caracciolo, Carlo Maria Giulini, and Giuseppe Sinopoli. During this time, the orchestra continued to build its reputation as one of Italy's leading orchestras, performing regularly in Turin and throughout Italy. In 1989, the orchestra appointed its current music director, Gianandrea Noseda. In 2001, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious Abbiati Prize for Best Italian Orchestra. The Turin Symphony Orchestra has collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Martha Argerich, Maurizio Pollini, and Maxim Vengerov. The orchestra has also performed with some of the world's leading conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, and Valery Gergiev. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was its 2006 concert at the BBC Proms in London, where it performed works by Verdi, Respighi, and Tchaikovsky under the baton of Noseda. The concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and was widely praised for its energy and virtuosity. In addition to its regular concert schedule, the Turin Symphony Orchestra is also committed to promoting music education and outreach.
