Ensemble Mosaik is a contemporary classical music group based in Berlin, Germany. The ensemble was founded in 1997 by five young musicians who shared a passion for contemporary music and a desire to explore new sounds and techniques. The founding members were Ulrich Löffler (clarinet), Simon Strasser (violin), Karen Lorenz (cello), Ernst Surberg (piano), and Martin Losert (saxophone). From the beginning, Ensemble Mosaik was committed to performing new and experimental music, often commissioning works from emerging composers. The group's repertoire includes a wide range of styles and genres, from avant-garde to minimalism to electronic music. The ensemble's name reflects this diversity, as "mosaik" means "mosaic" in German, suggesting a patchwork of different musical elements. Over the years, Ensemble Mosaik has become one of the most respected and innovative contemporary music groups in Europe. The ensemble has performed at major festivals and venues throughout the world, including the Donaueschingen Festival, the Venice Biennale, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and the Berliner Festspiele. The group has also collaborated with many renowned composers, including Helmut Lachenmann, Georg Friedrich Haas, and Rebecca Saunders. One of the highlights of Ensemble Mosaik's career was their performance of Helmut Lachenmann's opera "Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern" (The Little Match Girl) at the Berliner Festspiele in 2007. The opera, which is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, is known for its complex and challenging score, which requires a high level of technical skill and precision. Ensemble Mosaik's performance was widely praised for its virtuosity and sensitivity, and it helped to establish the group as a leading interpreter of Lachenmann's music. Another notable performance by Ensemble Mosaik was their collaboration with the electronic music duo Mouse on Mars at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in 2013. The two groups created a unique and innovative sound world, blending acoustic instruments with electronic sounds and effects. The performance was a testament to Ensemble Mosaik's versatility and willingness to experiment with new forms and technologies. Ensemble Mosaik has also received numerous awards and honors for their work. In 2002, the group was awarded the Schneider-Schott Music Prize, which recognizes outstanding achievements in contemporary music. In 2010, they received the German Record Critics' Award for their recording of works by the composer Carola Bauckholt. The ensemble has also been featured on many recordings and broadcasts, including several releases on the prestigious Wergo label. Despite their success and acclaim, Ensemble Mosaik remains committed to their original mission of exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of contemporary music. The group continues to commission and perform new works by emerging composers, and they are always looking for new ways to collaborate and innovate. With their technical skill, artistic vision, and adventurous spirit, Ensemble Mosaik is sure to remain a vital force in the world of contemporary classical music for many years to come.
