After completing her undergraduate studies in music at the University of Colorado, Pamela Z moved to San Francisco in 1979 to pursue a career in music. She quickly became involved in the city's vibrant experimental music scene, performing with a variety of ensembles and collaborating with artists in other disciplines, such as dance and theater. In the early 1980s, Pamela Z began to develop her own unique style of performance, which combined live vocals with electronic processing and manipulation of her voice and other sounds. One of Pamela Z's early works, "Parts of Speech," premiered in 1985 and was later released on CD.
