James Carroll Bartlett was an American composer and pianist who was born on December 8, 1937, in New York City. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Bartlett began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and piano with Rosina Lhévinne. Bartlett's early compositions were influenced by the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. He was also inspired by the music of contemporary composers such as Aaron Copland and Igor Stravinsky. Bartlett's first major work was his Piano Sonata No. 1, which he composed while still a student at Juilliard. The piece was well-received and helped establish Bartlett as a promising young composer. After graduating from Juilliard, Bartlett continued to compose and perform. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1961, which allowed him to study in Paris with the renowned composer Nadia Boulanger. While in Paris, Bartlett was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and began to incorporate elements of French impressionism into his compositions. Bartlett's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and intricate rhythms.
