Friedrich August Reissiger was a German composer and conductor who lived from 1809 to 1883. He was born in Belzig, a small town in the state of Brandenburg, Germany. His father was a musician and taught him to play the piano and violin from a young age. Reissiger showed great talent and was soon performing in public concerts. In 1826, Reissiger moved to Berlin to study music at the Royal Academy of Arts. He studied composition with Carl Friedrich Zelter and piano with Ludwig Berger. He also attended lectures by the famous composer and music theorist Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Reissiger was a diligent student and quickly gained a reputation as a talented composer and pianist. After completing his studies, Reissiger began working as a conductor and composer in Berlin. He conducted the Berlin Singakademie and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and he composed music for the theater and opera. His first opera, "Die Felsenmühle" (The Rock Mill), was performed in Berlin in 1832 and was a great success. Reissiger went on to compose many more operas, including "Die Königin von Golconda" (The Queen of Golconda) and "Die Flibustier" (The Buccaneers). Reissiger was also a prolific composer of instrumental music. He wrote many works for piano, including sonatas, variations, and character pieces. His piano music was popular in his time and was often performed in public concerts. He also composed chamber music, including string quartets and piano trios. One of Reissiger's most famous works is his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in E-flat major." This concerto is a virtuosic showpiece for the piano and is still performed today. Reissiger also wrote several symphonies, including his "Symphony No. 1 in C major," which was premiered in Berlin in 1839. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Reissiger was also a respected music teacher. He taught piano and composition at the Berlin Conservatory and had many famous students, including the composer and pianist Clara Schumann. Reissiger's music was popular in his time but fell out of favor in the 20th century. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in his music, and many of his works have been recorded and performed again. Friedrich August Reissiger was a talented composer and conductor who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. His operas, instrumental music, and symphonies are still enjoyed by audiences today, and his legacy as a teacher and mentor to many young musicians lives on.
