The Frost Wind Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based at the University of Miami. The ensemble was founded in 1980 by Gary Green, who served as its conductor until 2020. The Frost Wind Ensemble is made up of undergraduate and graduate students from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. The Frost Wind Ensemble has a reputation for excellence in performance and has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. The ensemble has performed at major music festivals and venues around the world, including the Midwest Clinic, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference, and Carnegie Hall. The Frost Wind Ensemble has also collaborated with some of the most renowned composers and conductors in the world, including John Corigliano, Michael Tilson Thomas, and John Williams. The ensemble has premiered many new works by contemporary composers, including Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon. One of the highlights of the Frost Wind Ensemble's history was its performance at the 2009 Midwest Clinic, which is considered one of the most prestigious music festivals in the world. The ensemble received a standing ovation for its performance of John Mackey's "Kingfishers Catch Fire." In addition to its performances, the Frost Wind Ensemble is also committed to music education and outreach. The ensemble regularly hosts workshops and masterclasses for high school and college students, and has also performed at schools and community centers throughout the Miami area. The Frost Wind Ensemble has been recognized for its excellence with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2011, the ensemble was named the winner of the American Prize in Wind Ensemble Performance, and in 2012, it was named the winner of the Sudler Trophy, which is considered the highest honor for collegiate wind ensembles. The Frost Wind Ensemble has also released several recordings over the years, including "The Music of John Mackey," which was named one of the top classical recordings of 2010 by NPR Music. The ensemble's current conductor is Steven D. Davis, who took over from Gary Green in 2020. Under Davis's leadership, the Frost Wind Ensemble continues to be one of the premier wind ensembles in the world, known for its commitment to excellence in performance and education.
