Artist Info
Role:ComposerAdam Porębski was a Polish composer born on December 22, 1959, in the city of Gdańsk. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Porębski began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin. He later attended the State Higher School of Music in Gdańsk, where he studied composition under the guidance of Professor Eugeniusz Knapik. Porębski's early works were heavily influenced by the avant-garde music of the 20th century, particularly the works of composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki and Witold Lutosławski. His compositions were characterized by their complex harmonies, dissonant chords, and unconventional use of instruments. One of Porębski's early works, "Concerto for Orchestra," was premiered in 1985 by the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The piece was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and it helped establish Porębski as a rising star in the Polish classical music scene. In the years that followed, Porębski continued to compose works that pushed the boundaries of traditional classical music. His compositions often featured unconventional instrumentation, such as his "Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1990 by the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra. Porębski's music also began to incorporate elements of Polish folk music, as well as other non-classical genres such as jazz and rock. This can be heard in his "Concerto for Violin and Jazz Band," which was premiered in 1995 by the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra and featured jazz musician Zbigniew Namysłowski on saxophone. In addition to his work as a composer, Porębski was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the State Higher School of Music in Gdańsk, where he had studied as a student. He also served as the director of the school's composition department from 2002 until his death in 2012. Porębski's later works continued to explore new musical territory, while also incorporating elements of his earlier compositions. His "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra," which was premiered in 2008 by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, is a prime example of this. The piece features complex harmonies and unconventional instrumentation, while also incorporating elements of Polish folk music. Porębski's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1999, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest civilian honors. He was also a recipient of the City of Gdańsk Award for Culture and Art in 2009. Adam Porębski passed away on December 22, 2012, at the age of 53. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to inspire new generations of musicians and composers in Poland and around the world.More....
