Born on August 1, 1940, in Toronto, Canada, Harris grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father, Frederick Harris Sr., was a pianist and composer, and his mother, Mary Harris, was a singer. Harris Jr. was exposed to music at a young age and began playing the piano when he was just four years old. Harris Jr. showed exceptional talent and dedication to music from an early age. He studied piano with his father and later with renowned pianist and teacher, Alberto Guerrero. Harris Jr. also studied composition with John Weinzweig and electronic music with Gustav Ciamaga at the University of Toronto. In 1963, Harris Jr. won the prestigious Eaton Graduate Fellowship, which allowed him to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied piano with Rosina Lhévinne and composition with Vincent Persichetti. Harris Jr. also had the opportunity to work with renowned conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and George Szell. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Harris Jr. returned to Toronto and began his career as a pianist, composer, and teacher. He quickly established himself as a leading figure in the Canadian music scene and became known for his virtuosic piano playing and innovative compositions. Harris Jr. has performed extensively throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in Europe and Asia. He has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Harris Jr.'s most memorable performances was his debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1967. He performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, to critical acclaim. The Toronto Star praised Harris Jr.'s "brilliant technique, impeccable musicianship, and deep understanding of the music." Harris Jr. has also been recognized for his contributions to the music industry. In 1975, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honors, for his achievements as a pianist and composer. He has also received numerous other awards and honors, including the Canadian Music Council Medal, the Toronto Arts Award, and the Queen's Jubilee Medal. In addition to his career as a performer, Harris Jr. is also a respected composer. He has written works for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra.
