She was born on August 8, 1978, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to a family of musicians. Her father, Nimal Ekanayaka, was a renowned Sri Lankan composer, and her mother, Chitra Ekanayaka, was a singer and music teacher. Tanya showed an interest in music from a young age and began learning the piano at the age of four. She was also exposed to traditional Sri Lankan music through her family and began learning to play the sitar and tabla. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Tanya attended Ladies' College, Colombo, where she excelled in music and won several awards for her performances. She went on to study music at the Royal College of Music in London, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. She also studied at the Trinity College of Music in London, where she earned a Master of Music degree in composition. Tanya's compositions are a fusion of traditional Sri Lankan music and Western classical music. She draws inspiration from the rich musical heritage of Sri Lanka, incorporating elements of traditional Sri Lankan music such as the use of the sitar, tabla, and other traditional instruments. Her compositions also feature Western classical music elements such as orchestration, harmony, and counterpoint. One of Tanya's most notable works is her composition "Pancha Turya," which was commissioned by the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka in 2006. The piece is a fusion of traditional Sri Lankan music and Western classical music and features the use of the sitar, tabla, and other traditional instruments. The piece was well-received by audiences and critics alike and helped to establish Tanya as a leading composer in Sri Lanka. Tanya has also composed music for film and television. She composed the score for the Sri Lankan film "Sulanga Enu Pinisa" (The Forsaken Land), which won several awards at international film festivals. She has also composed music for several television commercials and documentaries. In addition to her work as a composer, Tanya is also a music educator.
