Born on May 29, 1984, in New York City, Sopp grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. Her father, a jazz pianist, and her mother, a classical pianist, encouraged her to pursue music, and she began playing the flute at the age of nine. Sopp attended the Juilliard School, where she studied with Carol Wincenc and Samuel Baron. She also studied voice with Edith Wiens and composition with Robert Beaser. During her time at Juilliard, Sopp was a member of the New Juilliard Ensemble and the AXIOM Ensemble, which gave her the opportunity to perform contemporary music and work with living composers. After graduating from Juilliard in 2006, Sopp joined the New York-based contemporary music ensemble, Alarm Will Sound. The ensemble, which was founded in 2001, is known for its innovative performances of contemporary music and has collaborated with a wide range of composers, including Steve Reich, John Adams, and Aphex Twin. Her compositions have been performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center and the Bang on a Can Marathon. In 2015, she was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic to write a piece for their Biennial festival. Sopp has received numerous awards and honors for her work as a musician. One of Sopp's most notable performances was her solo debut at Carnegie Hall in 2017. The performance, which was part of the venue's "Late Nights at Zankel Hall" series, featured Sopp performing a program of contemporary music for flute and electronics. The New York Times praised her performance, calling it "mesmerizing" and "virtuosic." Sopp is also a dedicated educator and has taught at a number of institutions, including the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Bang on a Can Summer Festival. She is currently on the faculty at the Yale School of Music. In addition to her work as a musician, Sopp is also an advocate for social justice and environmental causes.
