She was the daughter of a Jewish family, and her father was a well-known conductor and composer. From a young age, Rahel showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Rahel's family fled Austria in 1938 due to the Nazi occupation, and they settled in Palestine. There, Rahel continued her music education and studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Alexander Uriah Boskovich. She also studied at the Jerusalem Conservatory of Music and Dance. In 1945, Rahel moved to the United States to further her music education. She studied at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1949. She continued her studies at the Manhattan School of Music, where she earned her Master of Music degree in 1951. Rahel's career as a concert pianist began in the early 1950s. She made her debut at Carnegie Hall in 1952, where she performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the New York Philharmonic. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly gained a reputation as a talented and skilled pianist. Throughout her career, Rahel performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. She also performed at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival. Rahel was known for her interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. She was particularly renowned for her performances of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which she recorded in their entirety for the Philips label in the 1960s. In addition to her performances, Rahel was also a respected music educator. She taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Michigan. Many of her students went on to have successful careers as musicians. Throughout her career, Rahel received numerous awards and honors. In 1961, she was awarded the Harriet Cohen International Music Award, which recognized her as one of the world's leading pianists. She was also awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1975 and the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria in 1995. Rahel continued to perform and teach until her death on December 31, 2001, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
