Donald McGeen was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music. Born on August 22, 1928, in New York City, McGeen was the son of a violinist and a pianist. His parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. McGeen began his musical training at the age of six, studying the piano with his mother. He later took up the trumpet and the French horn, which became his primary instrument. He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied with the legendary horn player James Chambers. After completing his studies at Juilliard, McGeen joined the New York Philharmonic as a French horn player.
