GermanyBirth:July 23, 1806 in Hamburg, GermanyDeath:November 18, 1887Eduard Marxsen was a German composer, pianist, and music teacher who lived from 1806 to 1887. He was born in Altona, a town near Hamburg, and showed an early aptitude for music. His father, Johann Marxsen, was a well-known music teacher who taught Eduard and his siblings from a young age. Eduard Marxsen began his formal music education at the age of six, studying piano and composition with his father. He quickly showed a talent for both, and by the age of ten, he was already performing in public concerts. In 1820, he entered the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied with the famous composer and pianist Johann Nepomuk Hummel. After completing his studies at the Leipzig Conservatory, Marxsen returned to Altona and began teaching music. He quickly gained a reputation as an excellent teacher, and his students included many future composers and performers. Among his most famous pupils were Johannes Brahms and Carl Reinecke. Marxsen's own compositions were largely forgotten after his death, but during his lifetime, he was well-respected as a composer. He wrote in a variety of genres, including piano music, chamber music, and choral music. His works were characterized by their lyricism and elegance, and he was known for his skillful use of harmony and counterpoint. One of Marxsen's most famous works is his Piano Concerto in A minor, which he composed in 1838. The concerto is notable for its virtuosic piano writing and its dramatic, Romantic style. It was well-received when it was first performed, and it remains a popular work among pianists today. Marxsen also wrote a number of chamber music works, including several string quartets and piano trios. His String Quartet in E-flat major, composed in 1842, is particularly noteworthy for its beautiful melodies and sophisticated harmonies. In addition to his work as a composer, Marxsen was also a respected music teacher. He taught at the Hamburg Conservatory for many years, and his students included some of the most famous musicians of the time. Brahms, in particular, was deeply influenced by Marxsen's teaching, and the two remained close friends throughout their lives. Marxsen's legacy as a composer and teacher is an important one. His influence can be seen in the works of many of his famous pupils, and his own compositions continue to be performed and studied today. Despite his relative obscurity today, Eduard Marxsen was a significant figure in the world of classical music, and his contributions to the art form should not be overlooked.More....
