Psappha is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in Manchester, England. Founded in 1991 by Tim Williams, the group has become known for its innovative programming and commitment to new music. The ensemble takes its name from the Greek word for "rhythm," reflecting its focus on the rhythmic and percussive elements of contemporary classical music. From its early days, Psappha has been dedicated to commissioning and performing new works by living composers, with a particular emphasis on British and European composers. The core members of Psappha are percussionist Tim Williams, pianist Benjamin Powell, and violinist Jennifer Langridge. Over the years, the ensemble has also worked with a rotating cast of guest musicians, including cellists Jennifer Langridge and James Manson, clarinetist Dov Goldberg, and flutist Clare Southworth. One of the highlights of Psappha's early years was its residency at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, which began in 1994. During this time, the ensemble worked closely with student composers and performers, helping to foster a new generation of contemporary classical musicians. In 2007, Psappha moved to its current home at St Michael's Church in Manchester, where it has continued to present innovative and challenging programs of new music. The ensemble has also toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe, performing at major festivals and concert halls. One of Psappha's most notable achievements was its 2011 performance of Steve Reich's "Drumming," which was hailed as a landmark event in the history of contemporary classical music. The performance, which featured a large ensemble of percussionists and vocalists, was praised for its precision and energy, and helped to cement Psappha's reputation as one of the UK's leading contemporary classical ensembles. In addition to its performances, Psappha has also been recognized for its contributions to contemporary classical music through a number of awards and honors. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Ensemble Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to classical music in the UK. Psappha has also been featured on numerous recordings, including its critically acclaimed 2016 album "Caught In Treetops," which features works by British composers Mark-Anthony Turnage, Harrison Birtwistle, and George Benjamin. Today, Psappha continues to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music, commissioning and performing new works by some of the most exciting and innovative composers working today. With its commitment to rhythmic and percussive elements, and its dedication to new music, Psappha has become a vital force in the world of contemporary classical music, inspiring audiences and musicians alike with its passion and creativity.
