The Doelen Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The ensemble was founded in 1990 by a group of musicians who were members of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. The founding members of the ensemble were Janine Jansen (violin), Julian Rachlin (violin), Mischa Maisky (cello), and Itamar Golan (piano). The ensemble's name comes from the De Doelen concert hall in Rotterdam, where the ensemble gave its first performance. The hall is known for its excellent acoustics and has been the home of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra since 1966. The Doelen Ensemble is known for its innovative programming and its commitment to contemporary music. The ensemble has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1996, the ensemble won the Dutch Music Prize, the highest honor for a musician in the Netherlands. The ensemble has also won the Edison Award, the Dutch equivalent of the Grammy Award, several times. In addition to its performances in the Netherlands, the Doelen Ensemble has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. The ensemble has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic.
