Marie Stockmarr Becker was a Danish classical music artist who was born on August 22, 1917, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was the daughter of a Danish father and a German mother. Her father was a well-known composer and conductor, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Marie showed a great interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Marie's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking piano lessons with her mother and later studied with several renowned pianists, including Egon Petri and Edwin Fischer. She also studied composition with her father. In 1936, Marie made her debut as a solo pianist at the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly gained a reputation as a talented and skilled pianist. She continued to perform in Denmark and other European countries, and in 1940, she won the prestigious Carl Nielsen Prize for her performance of Nielsen's Piano Concerto. During World War II, Marie continued to perform despite the difficult circumstances. She played for Danish soldiers and performed in concerts to raise money for the resistance movement. In 1943, she married the Danish composer and conductor Mogens Wöldike, and the couple had two children. After the war, Marie's career continued to flourish. She performed in concerts and recitals throughout Europe and the United States, and she recorded several albums of classical music. She was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. In 1956, Marie was invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland. Her performance was a great success, and she was invited back to the festival several times over the years. She also performed at other major festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Lucerne Festival. Marie's talent and dedication to music were recognized with several awards and honors throughout her career. In 1962, she was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors. She was also awarded the Carl Nielsen Medal in 1975 and the Tagea Brandt Rejselegat in 1980. Marie continued to perform and teach until her death on December 22, 2012, at the age of 95. She was remembered as a gifted pianist and a passionate advocate for classical music. Her legacy lives on through her recordings and the many students she taught over the years.
