Felix Arndt was an American composer and pianist who was born on May 20, 1889, in Hoboken, New Jersey. He was the son of German immigrants and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother was a singer, and they encouraged their son's musical talents from a young age. Arndt began playing the piano at the age of four and showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied piano with several teachers, including Alexander Lambert and Rafael Joseffy, and also studied composition with Percy Goetschius. By the age of 16, Arndt was already performing professionally as a pianist and had composed several pieces of music. In 1912, Arndt composed his most famous work, "Nola," which became a hit song and was recorded by many popular artists of the time. The piece is a ragtime composition that features a catchy melody and intricate piano playing. "Nola" was so popular that it was used in several films and television shows over the years. Arndt continued to compose and perform throughout his career, and he became known for his unique style that blended classical music with popular music. He wrote many pieces for piano, including rags, waltzes, and other dance music. He also composed music for films and theater productions. One of Arndt's most notable works is his "Three Fantastic Dances," which he composed in 1919. The piece is a suite of three dances that showcase Arndt's virtuosic piano playing and his ability to blend different musical styles. The first dance, "Novelette," is a slow and romantic piece, while the second dance, "Impromptu," is a fast and lively piece that features complex rhythms and syncopation. The final dance, "Rhapsody," is a dramatic and intense piece that builds to a thrilling climax. Arndt's music was popular during the early 20th century, but his popularity waned in the 1920s as jazz and other forms of popular music became more popular. However, his music has experienced a resurgence in recent years, and many pianists continue to perform his works. Arndt died on April 16, 1918, at the age of 28, from complications related to the Spanish flu pandemic. Despite his short life, he left behind a legacy of music that continues to be enjoyed by audiences around the world.
