He was the son of a musician, and his father played the violin in the local orchestra. Fabiani showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano and violin at a young age. He also showed a talent for composition, and by the age of 14, he had already written several pieces of music. In 1860, Fabiani moved to Bologna to study at the Liceo Musicale, where he studied composition with Giovanni Bottesini and Luigi Mancinelli. He also studied the piano with Carlo Pedron and the violin with Antonio Bazzini. During his time in Bologna, Fabiani became friends with several other young composers, including Giuseppe Martucci and Amilcare Ponchielli. After completing his studies in Bologna, Fabiani moved to Milan, where he worked as a music teacher and composer. In 1870, he was appointed as the conductor of the orchestra at the Teatro Carcano in Milan, a position he held for several years. During this time, he also composed several operas, including "La sposa di Corinto" and "La figlia del re." In 1876, Fabiani moved to Rome, where he became the conductor of the orchestra at the Teatro Costanzi. He also continued to compose, and during this time, he wrote several works for orchestra, including his Symphony No. 1 in C minor and his Symphony No. 2 in D major. He also wrote several chamber music works, including his String Quartet No. 1 in G minor and his Piano Trio in E flat major. In 1880, Fabiani was appointed as the director of the Liceo Musicale in Pesaro, a position he held for several years. During this time, he continued to compose and also taught composition to several young composers, including Ottorino Respighi. Fabiani's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and colorful orchestration. His operas are notable for their dramatic intensity and emotional depth, while his orchestral works are marked by their virtuosic solo passages and lush textures. Some of Fabiani's most notable works include his opera "La sposa di Corinto," which premiered in Milan in 1871, and his Symphony No. 2 in D major, which was premiered in Rome in 1880. He also wrote several works for chamber ensemble, including his String Quartet No. 1 in G minor and his Piano Trio in E flat major. Despite his success as a composer and conductor, Fabiani remained relatively unknown outside of Italy during his lifetime. However, his music has since gained recognition and is now performed and recorded by orchestras and ensembles around the world.
