The Vicars Choral of Wells Cathedral is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been performing for over 800 years. The ensemble is made up of 18 professional singers who are responsible for leading the daily choral services at Wells Cathedral in Somerset, England. The origins of the Vicars Choral can be traced back to the 12th century when the Bishop of Bath and Wells established a group of singers to perform at the newly built cathedral. Over the centuries, the ensemble has evolved and grown in size, but its core mission has remained the same: to provide beautiful and inspiring music for the worship services at Wells Cathedral. The current members of the Vicars Choral are all highly trained and experienced singers who have studied at some of the world's most prestigious music schools and conservatories. They are led by the Director of Music, Matthew Owens, who is responsible for selecting the repertoire and overseeing the ensemble's performances. One of the highlights of the Vicars Choral's calendar is the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, which takes place on Christmas Eve. This service, which was first introduced at King's College, Cambridge in 1918, has become a beloved tradition in churches and cathedrals around the world. The Vicars Choral's rendition of this service is particularly special, as it features a mix of traditional carols and contemporary choral works. In addition to their regular performances at Wells Cathedral, the Vicars Choral have also been invited to perform at a number of prestigious venues and events around the world. In 2015, they were invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the BBC Proms, a series of concerts that showcases the best of classical music. The ensemble received rave reviews for their performance, with critics praising their "exquisite harmonies" and "impeccable technique." The Vicars Choral have also been recognized for their contributions to the world of classical music. In 2017, they were awarded the prestigious Gramophone Award for their recording of the choral works of Herbert Howells.
