Filippo Sauli was an Italian composer of the Baroque era, born in Genoa in 1663. He was born into a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a singer. Sauli began his musical education at a young age, studying under his father and other prominent musicians in Genoa. Sauli's talent as a composer was evident from a young age, and he quickly gained recognition for his works. In 1683, at the age of 20, he was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato in Genoa, a position he held for over 40 years. During his time as maestro di cappella, Sauli composed a large number of works for the church, including masses, motets, and hymns. His compositions were known for their intricate harmonies and use of counterpoint, and he was highly regarded by his contemporaries for his skill as a composer. One of Sauli's most famous works is his Stabat Mater, a hymn that tells the story of the Virgin Mary's grief at the crucifixion of Jesus. The piece is known for its haunting melody and emotional depth, and it has been performed by countless choirs and orchestras around the world. In addition to his sacred works, Sauli also composed a number of secular pieces, including operas and chamber music.
