Marie Vermeulin is a French classical pianist who has gained international recognition for her virtuosic performances and insightful interpretations of a wide range of repertoire. Born in 1983 in Marseille, Vermeulin began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where she earned a Premier Prix in piano performance and chamber music. Vermeulin's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in the early 2000s, when she won several prestigious competitions, including the International Piano Competition of Orléans and the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship. These early successes helped to establish her as a rising star in the classical music world, and she soon began to receive invitations to perform at major venues and festivals throughout Europe and beyond. One of Vermeulin's most notable early performances was at the 2006 Festival de la Roque d'Anthéron, where she played a program of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Ravel to critical acclaim. This performance helped to cement her reputation as a pianist of exceptional technical skill and musical sensitivity, and she soon became a sought-after performer on the international concert circuit. Over the years, Vermeulin has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with a number of distinguished conductors, such as Jean-Claude Casadesus, Fabien Gabel, and Tugan Sokhiev. In addition to her work as a soloist and chamber musician, Vermeulin is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught at the Conservatoire National de Région de Marseille and the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris, and has given masterclasses at institutions around the world. Her commitment to education and outreach has earned her numerous awards and accolades, including the Médaille de la Ville de Marseille and the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Throughout her career, Vermeulin has been praised for her ability to bring fresh insights to even the most familiar works in the piano repertoire. Her performances are marked by a combination of technical precision, emotional depth, and intellectual rigor, and she is known for her ability to communicate the essence of a piece to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Some of Vermeulin's most notable recordings include her 2010 album of works by Schumann, which was praised for its "clarity, precision, and sensitivity" by Gramophone magazine, and her 2016 album of works by Debussy, which was hailed as "a revelatory interpretation" by The Guardian. She has also recorded works by Chopin, Liszt, Ravel, and many other composers, and her recordings have earned her numerous awards and nominations, including a Diapason d'Or and a Victoire de la Musique Classique. In recent years, Vermeulin has continued to expand her repertoire and explore new musical horizons. She has collaborated with a number of contemporary composers, including Thierry Escaich and Philippe Hersant, and has premiered several new works for piano. She has also been involved in a number of interdisciplinary projects, such as the multimedia performance piece "Le Piano du XXIe siècle," which combines live music with video projections and other visual elements.
