The ensemble is named after the famous Amati family of violin makers from Cremona, Italy, who were active in the 16th and 17th centuries. The founding members of the ensemble were violinist David Brickman, violist Lois Martin, and cellist Michael Finckel. David Brickman, the founder and artistic director of the Amati Chamber Ensemble, is a graduate of the Juilliard School and has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and chamber ensembles. Lois Martin, the ensemble's violist, is also a graduate of the Juilliard School and has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Michael Finckel, the ensemble's cellist, is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra. Over the years, the Amati Chamber Ensemble has performed at many of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Ravinia Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival. The ensemble has also collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including pianists Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman, violinist Joshua Bell, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of the Amati Chamber Ensemble's career was their performance at the 1994 Mostly Mozart Festival, where they performed Mozart's Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor with pianist Emanuel Ax. The performance was widely praised by critics and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading chamber ensembles in the world. In addition to their performances, the Amati Chamber Ensemble has also been recognized for their recordings. The ensemble's recording of Mozart's Piano Quartets, which was released in 1995, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance. The ensemble's recording of Brahms's Piano Quartets, which was released in 2000, was also widely praised by critics and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading interpreters of Brahms's chamber music. The Amati Chamber Ensemble has also been recognized for their commitment to education and outreach. The ensemble has performed in schools and community centers throughout the United States, and has worked with young musicians through masterclasses and workshops. The ensemble has also been involved in the creation of new works, commissioning and premiering works by composers such as Richard Danielpour and Lowell Liebermann. Today, the Amati Chamber Ensemble continues to perform and record, and remains one of the leading chamber ensembles in the world. The ensemble's commitment to excellence in performance, education, and outreach has helped to inspire and educate generations of musicians and music lovers.More....
