Il Tempio Armonico is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1999 by Italian violinist and conductor, Giovanni Antonini. The ensemble is known for its performances of Baroque and Classical music, and has gained international recognition for its innovative interpretations and virtuosic playing. Giovanni Antonini, who serves as the ensemble's artistic director and conductor, was born in Milan in 1965. He began studying the violin at a young age, and went on to study at the Civica Scuola di Musica in Milan and the Hochschule für Musik in Basel, Switzerland. Antonini is also a founding member of the acclaimed Baroque ensemble, Il Giardino Armonico. Il Tempio Armonico's other core members include Enrico Onofri and Marco Bianchi on violin, Alberto Guerrero on viola, Luca Peverini on cello, and Francesco Galligioni on harpsichord. The ensemble often collaborates with guest soloists and vocalists, including mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg and countertenor Philippe Jaroussky. One of Il Tempio Armonico's early highlights was their 2001 recording of Antonio Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," which was released on the Naïve label. The recording received critical acclaim and helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as one of the leading interpreters of Baroque music. The ensemble has since recorded numerous albums, including works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart. Il Tempio Armonico has performed at major concert halls and festivals around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the BBC Proms. The ensemble has also collaborated with leading orchestras, such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. In 2004, Il Tempio Armonico was awarded the prestigious Gramophone Award for their recording of Vivaldi's "La Stravaganza." The ensemble has also received numerous other awards and nominations, including the Echo Klassik Award and the Diapason d'Or.
