Mayhew Lester Lake was an American composer and pianist who was born on September 20, 1868, in Norwich, Connecticut. He was the son of a music teacher and began his musical education at a young age. Lake showed a natural talent for music and quickly became proficient in playing the piano. Lake's family moved to Boston when he was a child, and he continued his musical education there. He studied with several prominent musicians, including George Whitefield Chadwick and John Knowles Paine. Lake also attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition with Chadwick. After completing his studies, Lake began his career as a composer and pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented musician and was soon performing in concerts throughout the United States.
