She was born into a family of musicians, with her father being a composer and her mother a pianist. Jolas began her musical education at a young age, studying piano and music theory with her mother. She later studied composition with Darius Milhaud and Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatory. Jolas' early works were influenced by the French avant-garde movement, particularly the music of Messiaen and Pierre Boulez. Her compositions from this period were characterized by their use of serialism and atonality. However, Jolas soon began to develop her own unique style, which incorporated elements of jazz, folk music, and improvisation. One of Jolas' most significant works is her 1974 composition "Quatuor II," which was commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation. The piece is scored for string quartet and features a complex, multi-layered texture that is typical of Jolas' music. "Quatuor II" has been performed by many of the world's leading string quartets and is considered a masterpiece of contemporary chamber music. Another notable work by Jolas is her 1985 composition "A Little Summer Suite," which was commissioned by the Orchestre de Paris. The piece is scored for chamber orchestra and features a light, playful character that is reminiscent of the French Impressionist composers. "A Little Summer Suite" has become one of Jolas' most popular works and is frequently performed by orchestras around the world. Jolas has also composed several works for solo instruments, including "Episode 1" for solo cello and "Episode 2" for solo violin. These pieces showcase Jolas' ability to create complex, virtuosic music that is both challenging and rewarding for the performer. In addition to her work as a composer, Jolas has also been a prominent figure in the world of music education. She has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Paris Conservatory, the University of California, Berkeley, and Columbia University. Jolas has also served as a guest lecturer and composer-in-residence at numerous universities and music festivals around the world. Throughout her career, Jolas has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to contemporary music. In 2006, she was awarded the Grand Prix de Musique de la Ville de Paris, and in 2018, she was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize. Jolas continues to compose and teach, and her music remains an important part of the contemporary classical repertoire.More....
