He was born on October 10, 1951, in Wichita, Kansas, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a pianist. Lowry began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Lowry attended Wichita State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. He then went on to study at the University of Southern California, where he earned a Master of Music degree in piano performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition. While at USC, Lowry studied with renowned composers such as Morten Lauridsen and Frederick Lesemann. After completing his studies, Lowry began his career as a composer and conductor. He held positions at several universities, including the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Minnesota School of Music. He also served as the Dean of the Eastman School of Music from 2007 until his death in 2013. Lowry's compositions were highly regarded in the classical music world. He wrote works for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo instruments. His music was often characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and intricate rhythms. Some of his most notable works include "Symphony No. 1," "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," and "String Quartet No. 1." Lowry was also an accomplished conductor, and he led many orchestras and ensembles throughout his career.
