Hoffman's sister, Barbara Stein Mallow, is also a violist. Hoffman began playing the viola at the age of six, under the guidance of his mother. He later studied at the Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree. He continued his studies at Yale University, where he received his Master of Music degree. Hoffman's career as a violist began in the 1970s, when he joined the New York Philharmonic. He also performed with other orchestras, including the American Symphony Orchestra and the New York Chamber Symphony.
