He was the youngest of six children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a church choir director, and his mother was a singer. Mganga's siblings were also involved in music, with his older brother playing the guitar and his sisters singing in the church choir. Mganga's interest in music began at a young age, and he started playing the piano when he was just six years old. He was a natural musician and quickly became proficient in playing the instrument. He also showed an interest in composing music, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already written several pieces. After completing his primary education, Mganga attended the Tandale Teachers College, where he studied music education. He then went on to study music composition at the University of Dar es Salaam, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. Mganga's early compositions were heavily influenced by Western classical music, particularly the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. However, he also drew inspiration from traditional Tanzanian music, incorporating elements of Swahili rhythms and melodies into his compositions. One of Mganga's most notable works is his opera, "Mwana Kupona," which tells the story of a young Swahili woman who defies tradition and marries for love. The opera premiered in 1997 and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. It was later performed in several other countries, including Germany and the United States. Another of Mganga's notable works is his "Tanzanian Suite," which is a collection of pieces that showcase the diversity of Tanzanian music. The suite includes traditional Tanzanian songs, as well as original compositions by Mganga. Throughout his career, Mganga was a prolific composer, and his works were performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. He was also a respected music educator and taught at several universities in Tanzania. Sadly, Mganga passed away on August 17, 2014, at the age of 56. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.More....
