La Maîtrise Boréale is a classical music ensemble based in Quebec, Canada. The group was founded in 2012 by conductor and artistic director, Francis Choinière. The ensemble is made up of young singers between the ages of 8 and 25, who are passionate about classical music and choral singing. The group's name, La Maîtrise Boréale, translates to "The Northern Mastery" in English. This name reflects the group's commitment to excellence in choral singing, as well as their pride in their northern Canadian heritage. La Maîtrise Boréale has quickly become one of the most respected choral ensembles in Canada. The group has won numerous awards and accolades for their performances, including the prestigious Healey Willan Grand Prize in the 2016 National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. The ensemble's repertoire is diverse, ranging from classical choral works to contemporary pieces. They have performed works by composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Brahms, as well as modern composers like Eric Whitacre and Ola Gjeilo. One of the highlights of La Maîtrise Boréale's career was their performance at the 2017 World Symposium on Choral Music in Barcelona, Spain. The group was one of only a handful of choirs from around the world to be invited to perform at this prestigious event. Their performance was met with critical acclaim, and they received a standing ovation from the audience. Another notable performance by La Maîtrise Boréale was their collaboration with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 2018. The group performed Carl Orff's Carmina Burana with the orchestra, under the direction of conductor Kent Nagano.
