Jan Nykryn was born on May 12, 1985, in Prague, Czech Republic. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Nykryn showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Nykryn's talent was quickly recognized, and he began receiving formal training at the Prague Conservatory at the age of seven. He continued his studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. Throughout his career, Nykryn has won numerous awards and accolades for his exceptional talent and skill as a pianist. In 2005, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Brno, Czech Republic. He also won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Vienna, Austria, in 2007. Nykryn has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has collaborated with many renowned orchestras, including the Czech Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Nykryn's most notable performances was his debut at Carnegie Hall in 2010. He performed a program of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven to critical acclaim. The New York Times praised his "virtuosic technique and sensitive interpretation," and he received a standing ovation from the audience. In addition to his solo performances, Nykryn is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including violinist Joshua Bell and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. He is a member of the Nykryn Trio, which he formed with his brother, cellist Martin Nykryn, and violinist Pavel Sporcl. Nykryn is also a dedicated teacher and has taught masterclasses at many prestigious institutions, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is currently a professor of piano at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Nykryn's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He is particularly known for his interpretations of Chopin's works, and his recording of Chopin's complete Nocturnes has received critical acclaim. In addition to his performances and recordings, Nykryn is also a composer. He has written several works for piano, including a piano concerto that he premiered with the Czech Philharmonic in 2015. Despite his many accomplishments, Nykryn remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to push himself to new heights and is always seeking to improve his technique and interpretation. His passion for music is evident in every performance, and he is widely regarded as one of the most talented and accomplished pianists of his generation.
