Ervin T. Rouse was a renowned American composer of classical music, best known for his composition of the popular fiddle tune "Orange Blossom Special." Born on July 21, 1917, in the small town of Craven County, North Carolina, Rouse grew up in a family of musicians. His father, James Rouse, was a fiddler, and his mother, Lula Rouse, was a singer. Rouse's siblings were also musically inclined, and they often played together as a family band. Rouse's interest in music began at an early age, and he started playing the fiddle when he was just six years old. He quickly became proficient in the instrument and began performing with his family band at local events and gatherings. Rouse's father recognized his son's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. In the 1930s, Rouse moved to Florida with his family and began playing with various bands in the area. He also started composing his own music, drawing inspiration from the traditional fiddle tunes he had grown up playing. Rouse's compositions were well-received, and he soon gained a reputation as a talented composer and performer. In 1938, Rouse composed what would become his most famous work, "Orange Blossom Special." The tune was inspired by the Orange Blossom Special train, which ran from New York to Miami and was a popular mode of transportation for musicians traveling to Florida. Rouse's composition captured the excitement and energy of the train, and it quickly became a favorite among fiddlers and other musicians. "Orange Blossom Special" was first recorded by Rouse and his brother Gordon in 1939. The recording was a hit, and the tune soon became a staple of the country and bluegrass music scenes. Over the years, "Orange Blossom Special" has been recorded by countless artists, including Johnny Cash, Chet Atkins, and Dolly Parton. In addition to "Orange Blossom Special," Rouse composed many other fiddle tunes and classical pieces throughout his career. His compositions were known for their intricate melodies and complex harmonies, and they were often performed by other musicians at fiddle contests and other events. Despite his success as a composer and performer, Rouse remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to play and compose music throughout his life, and he was always willing to share his knowledge and expertise with other musicians. Ervin T. Rouse passed away on July 14, 1981, at the age of 63. His legacy as a composer and performer lives on, and his music continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
