Born on December 2, 1952, in Liège, Belgium, Rassinfosse grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. As a child, Rassinfosse was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, which helped him develop a deep appreciation for music. Rassinfosse began playing the double bass at the age of 14. He was initially drawn to the instrument because of its deep, rich sound, which he found captivating. He quickly developed a passion for the double bass and began studying under the guidance of renowned Belgian bassist Jean Warland. In 1972, Rassinfosse moved to Brussels to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He studied under the tutelage of François Rabbath, a world-renowned double bassist and composer. Rassinfosse was deeply influenced by Rabbath's innovative approach to the double bass, which emphasized the instrument's versatility and range. After completing his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Rassinfosse began performing with various jazz and classical ensembles. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and versatile bassist, capable of playing a wide range of musical styles. In 1980, Rassinfosse formed his own trio, which included pianist Michel Herr and drummer Aldo Romano. The trio quickly gained a following in Belgium and began performing at major jazz festivals throughout Europe. In 1983, the trio released their debut album, "Jean-Louis Rassinfosse Trio," which received critical acclaim and helped establish Rassinfosse as a leading figure in the European jazz scene. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Rassinfosse continued to perform and record with a wide range of jazz and classical ensembles. He collaborated with some of the most respected musicians in the world, including Toots Thielemans, Chet Baker, and Lee Konitz.
