Born on June 17, 1962, in Split, Croatia, Gekic showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the instrument and began studying with some of the most respected teachers in Croatia. Gekic's early years were marked by a series of impressive accomplishments. At the age of nine, he won his first national competition, and by the time he was 12, he had already performed with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1978, he won first prize at the Jeunesses Musicales International Competition in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and in 1981, he was awarded the prestigious Vladimir Horowitz Prize in Milan, Italy.
