The Vienna Operetta Choir is a classical music group that specializes in performing operettas, a type of light opera that originated in Vienna in the 19th century. The choir was founded in 1997 by conductor and artistic director Gerald Wirth, who had previously been a member of the Vienna Boys' Choir. The choir's mission is to preserve and promote the tradition of Viennese operetta, which is known for its catchy melodies, witty lyrics, and lighthearted themes. The group's repertoire includes works by composers such as Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehár, and Emmerich Kálmán, as well as lesser-known composers from the operetta genre. The Vienna Operetta Choir has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna, as well as Carnegie Hall in New York City. The group has also toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, earning critical acclaim for their performances. One of the highlights of the Vienna Operetta Choir's career was their performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where they represented Austria in the cultural program. The choir performed a selection of Viennese operettas, including "The Merry Widow" by Franz Lehár, to an audience of millions around the world. In addition to their live performances, the Vienna Operetta Choir has also released several recordings, including "Viennese Operetta Gala" and "Viennese Operetta Christmas." The group's recordings have been praised for their high-quality sound and authentic interpretation of the operetta genre. Over the years, the Vienna Operetta Choir has received numerous awards and honors for their contributions to classical music. In 2003, the group was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class, in recognition of their cultural achievements. In 2017, the choir was named "Cultural Ambassador of Vienna" by the city's tourism board, cementing their status as one of the most important cultural institutions in Austria. Despite their success, the Vienna Operetta Choir remains committed to their mission of preserving and promoting the tradition of Viennese operetta.
