Marion Talley was an American soprano who rose to fame in the early 20th century. She was born on December 20, 1906, in Nevada, Missouri, to a musical family. Her father was a violinist and her mother was a pianist, and they encouraged her to pursue a career in music from a young age. Talley began singing in church choirs and local concerts as a child, and her talent was quickly recognized. She studied voice with various teachers, including the renowned soprano Lillian Nordica, and made her professional debut at the age of 17 in a concert in Kansas City. In 1925, Talley won the Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air, a national radio competition that sought to discover new talent for the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Her performance of the aria "Caro nome" from Verdi's opera Rigoletto impressed the judges and won her a contract with the Met. Talley made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera on November 7, 1925, as Gilda in Rigoletto. She was only 18 years old at the time, making her one of the youngest singers ever to perform at the Met. Her performance was a sensation, and she received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Over the next few years, Talley became one of the most popular and beloved sopranos at the Metropolitan Opera. She sang a wide range of roles, from Mozart's Queen of the Night to Puccini's Mimi, and was known for her clear, pure voice and her dramatic intensity. One of Talley's most famous performances was in the world premiere of Gian Carlo Menotti's opera The Old Maid and the Thief in 1939. She played the role of Miss Pinkerton, a busybody spinster who becomes embroiled in a web of deceit and intrigue. Talley's performance was praised for its comic timing and vocal agility, and the opera became a hit. Talley also had a successful career outside of the Metropolitan Opera. She performed in concerts and recitals all over the world, and made several recordings for RCA Victor. She was particularly known for her interpretations of French art songs, and was praised for her ability to convey the emotional depth and subtlety of the music. Despite her success, Talley's career was cut short by health problems. She suffered from asthma and other respiratory issues, which made it difficult for her to sing for long periods of time. She retired from the Metropolitan Opera in 1943, at the age of 36, and focused on teaching and mentoring young singers. Talley received many honors and awards throughout her career. In 1936, she was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur by the French government for her contributions to French music. She was also inducted into the Missouri Walk of Fame in 2006, on the 100th anniversary of her birth. Marion Talley died on January 7, 1983, at the age of 76. She is remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of the early 20th century, and as a trailblazer for women in classical music. Her legacy lives on through her recordings and the many singers she inspired and mentored throughout her career.
